Barbara Lee Williams

Did you receive any awards or honors during your time in the program?

Twice awarded a FLAS Fellowship for the study of Intermediate and Advanced Swedish.

What is your current position?

Program Director for the PhD & MACRM programs in the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago

How has the MAEUS program helped you in your current career?

The interdisciplinary nature of the MAEUS program was advantageous to me both academically and professionally. During my program I was able to explore coursework in many departments across campus to arrive at the study of cultural adaption through Swedish literature at the height of the so-called "migrant crisis." I use what I learned about integration and assimilation on a daily basis in my work with a very diverse group of graduate students, who themselves are going through an interdisciplinary program. Furthermore, I received extraordinary support from the MAEUS staff and faulty during my program and I proudly pay that forward with the students I now advise.

Do you have any advice or suggestions for current students in the MAEUS program?

Take a methodology course in your first year, meet with the career services staff, and--as my advisor told me--"ask early and often!"
