What is the focus of your current work and/or subject of your current research?

Currently, I am engaged in research during my sabbatical on international legal norms surrounding Traditional Cultural Expression (TCE) protection. There is no standard definition of TCEs, but the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) notes that it "may include music, dance, art, designs, names, signs and symbols, performances, ceremonies, architectural forms, handicrafts and narratives, or many other artistic or cultural expressions." WIPO also notes that "TCEs are integral to the cultural and social identities of indigenous and local communities, embody know-how and skills, and transmit core values and beliefs." I am currently engaged in a Delphi study in which a group of experts from all around the world are asked targeted questions about TCE legal protections to try to find a consensus and path forward for international TCE legal protections.

What classes do you teach? What are some of the topics of those classes?

I teach Introduction to Copyright for Information Professionals as well as Advanced Copyright for Information Professionals at the School of Information Science. We discuss the many ways in which copyright intersects with the work of information professionals in library and data science

Do you have any recent awards, honors, or publications that you would like to highlight?

I was recently given a campus award for my public engagement--the Emerging Award for Excellency in Public Engagement. It was so nice to be recognized by the campus for my advocacy work on behalf of academic and research libraries.

What is a book (academic or non-academic, in or outside your field) that you think should be more widely read?

This might sound rather boring, but I wish more librarians were familiar with the US Copyright Act. We read many parts of the statute in my classes at the iSchool.

Is there any additional information or advice you'd like to share?

I find my job rewarding because I am a practitioner--helping campus members navigate copyright issues--as well as a teacher and scholar. I am currently working with a PhD student from the iSchool as well as GAs from the iSchool. My job is so diverse that there is never a dull moment. I hope that more librarians consider copyright librarianship as a career option--I have found it very fulfilling!
