Please contact the EU Center Associate Director Markian Dobczansky (markian@illinois.edu).
What GPA is needed for admission into this program?
The average cumulative undergraduate GPA of admitted students is 3.55. Although numerical indicators are important in the admissions review process, the EU Center admissions committee factors in all components of the required application materials while making its decision.
Are there any prerequisites for applicants?
Yes. (1) Applicants should have completed at least two years of a European language on their undergraduate transcripts OR demonstrate proficiency via a placement exam through the university’s language department. Heritage speakers of European languages may also test out of this requirement. Non-European languages will be considered on a case-by-case basis, dependent on the relevance and usefulness to research interests of the student. (2) Applicants to MAEUS should hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university by the time of entry into the program, unless the applicant is a University of Illinois undergraduate pursuing the 5-year BA/MA program.
How should I submit my letters of reference?
Letters of reference should be submitted through the Graduate College’s Web-based electronic application. Three letters are required.
Where do I send my certified copies of all transcripts?
Students will submit two versions of all transcripts. (1) During the application process, applicants are required to submit electronic versions (e.g. scanned or printed to PDF) of all transcripts in the online graduate student application system. (2) Following the application process, admitted applicants should request original, certified copies of all transcripts to be mailed directly to the EU Center before the beginning of their first semester.

Degree Requirements and Curriculum Options
How long does it take to complete the program?
Most students finish the program in two years (four semesters), although an accelerated three-semester option (not including summer) can work in some cases. Interested applicants should consult with the Academic Programs Coordinator (Amanda Smith, ansmith8@illinois.edu) to determine which option works best.
What type of areas hire experts in the EU?
Government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international businesses, law, trade groups, not-for-profit associations, education, journalism, and think tanks.
What type of internship opportunities are available?
Students are strongly encourage to seek internships during the summer between the first and second year of the program, in consultation with EU Center staff. It can also be possible to arrange for a semester-long internship, particularly in virtual formats that can be done at the same time as coursework. MAEUS alumni have completed internshipswith the European Parliament in Brussels, the Illinois International Trade Office for Western Europe in Brussels, the Goethe Institute in Chicago, and the Fulbright Commission in Brussels. the US State Department in Paris and Washington, DC, and the American Chamber of Commerce in Luxembourg.
Is it possible to study abroad?
Yes, graduate-level study abroad exchanges can be arranged. The University has several strategic partnerships and exchange agreements. If you would like for this to be part of your MAEUS program, please identify your intention to the EUC academic staff as soon as possible, because these arrangements take significant time and planning.
Do you offer any online courses?
At this time, our courses are taught in person.
Can the MAEUS degree be combined with other graduate degrees on campus?
Students may pursue another graduate degree while taking courses for the MAEUS degree program. In the past, students have successfully completed graduate degrees in law (J.D.), business (MBA), and library and information science (MS) alongside the MAEUS, and these students have typically completed both degrees within 3 years. Students interested in pursuing simultaneous MA degrees must apply separately for both programs, indicate to each program their intentions to pursue both degrees uponacceptance, and work closely with advisors throughout each program to ensure that adequate progress is being made towards each degree.
Are there any joint degree programs within MAEUS?
At this time, there are no official joint degree MAEUS programs.
