The Undergraduate Certificate in European Union Studies is open to all undergraduate students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
The European Union Center has designed the certificate for students interested in gaining specialized knowledge of EU institutions and their political, cultural, social, legal, and global influence. Students will acquire fundamental knowledge and critical skills from a variety of disciplines as they grapple with the complexities of the European Union from multiple angles. The certificate is presented “with honors” when a student studies a non-English language of the EU for at least one year in addition to the 11 credits of required courses, which demonstrates that student’s linguistic ability and intercultural competency.
The certificate program emphasizes the study of:
- Comparative Politics
- International Relations
- European and World History
- Culture and Society
The certificate allows students to earn a non-transcriptable academic credential that highlights their expertise in interdisciplinary understandings of the European Union from an internationally renowned Jean Monnet Center of Excellence and U.S. Title VI National Resource Center. This skillset and certification are valuable to a variety of organizations and institutions, including American and international governmental organizations, international non-governmental organizations, private sector companies, and academic institutions. Students are encouraged to list the ceritficate on their resume or CV. Certificate courses at the 400 and 500 level may also meet some of the requirements for the European Union Center’s 5 Year BA/MA Program in European Union Studies.
